Physics momentum question?
A movie director is shooting a scene that involves dropping a 150N stunt dummy out of an airplane and into a swimming pool. The plane is 10m above the ground, traveling at a velocity of 22.5m/s in the positive x direction. (a) The director wants to know the momentum of the stunt dummy the moment it strikes the water. (b) How far does the dummy travel horizontally before it hits the water below?
I came up with the correct answer for part a, but i cant get part b. The answer is supposed to be 32.2m but i keep getting 60.75m. Help would be appreciated.
The time taken to fall 10 m is given by
s = 10m = ½at² = ½•9.8m/s²•t²
t = 1.43s
Since its horizontal velocity is constant at 22.5 m/s, it travels
s = 1.43s•22.5m/s = 32.1 m
in that time.
