Costa Rica Travel – Top 3 Protected Reserves by Henry Arnault
One of the most exotic and beautiful countries in Latin America, teeming with dizzying volcanoes, tropical forests, and white sandy beaches, Costa Rica is a top travel destination. Here, nature lovers will delight in the countless opportunities to discover untamed nature, observe exotic animals and swim in crystalline waters. Costa Rica’s nature is so wonderful that UNESCO has deemed it necessary to preserve some of its most impressive sites, by inscribing them to its World Heritage Site List. Let’s see what makes the country’s 3 protected sites so special!
La Amistad National Park lies in the heart of the mountains of the Cordillera Talamanca, at the border between Costa Rica and Panama. This range is known as the highest, and wildest, of all non-volcanic mountain ranges in Central America. Filled with glaciers, lakes, and steep valleys, this is the only place in Central America to ever show signs of glaciations.
It is also covered with lush tropical rainforest and cloud forest. This diverse and absolutely stunning reserve is home to countless exotic fauna to observe, if you’re lucky enough to find it! Here, you’re likely to see tapirs, pumas, jaguars, as well as various species of monkeys. In addition to spectacular nature, La Amistad National Park is home to several noteworthy archeological sites, some dating back to 12,000 years ago.
Located about 550 kilometers off of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, Cocos Island is the only island in the tropical Pacific covered with rainforest. Now a national reserve, the island is laboratory to observe unique exotic marine wildlife. This is one of the world’s most exciting diving spots, as divers can swim alongside sharks, rays, and dolphins among many others. The vegetation on Isla del Coco is particularly luxuriant and exuberant thanks to the heavy rain falls. From clear water streams and mountains to beautiful sandy beaches, this island is a true wonder to explore.
The Guanacaste Reserve is situated in the north western part of Costa Rica. The area stretches over 105 kilometers and covers the Cordillera Guanacaste with 3 towering volcanoes. The most famous is Rincon de la Vieja, which boasts three craters and a beautiful lagoon. There is also over 30 river streams originating in the vicinity of the volcano. The beaches and wetland forests are considered as among the most beautiful in the world, and are of particular importance for the protection of many species. The main protected animal on the shores of the Guanacaste bay is the turtle, with a population of over 250,000 turtles that come each year to nest here.
