Travel Beauty Tips: Packing Cosmetics   by Christina Jefferson

Vacations are exciting! From the picturesque scenery to the memory making, you don’t want anything to mar your enjoyment of your amazing trip – especially the packing. Having, or not having, your essential beauty products on hand can make a world of a difference in how you feel during your travels. To ensure that you continue to look amazing on your relaxing getaway, the following are some tips for stocking your cosmetic bag to maximize your limited space:

Personal Hygiene

The great thing about personal hygiene products is that they are generally sold at hotels. Deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and razors, can be found pretty easily at many travel destinations. It’s up to you to decide whether you prefer to purchase these items at your destination or if you want to pack them. If you choose to save the space, it’s a good idea to check with the hotel and inquire about which items are complimentary and which will cost you. Unfortunately, fees can range from minimal to pricey, depending on your accommodations.

Palettes and Sets

Keeping in line with the compact theme, we come to palettes and sets. Many cosmetics companies sell eyeshadow, blush and lipstick in one handy palette that is small and lightweight. Ideally, you’d have one go-to set that would contain most, if not all, of your makeup for your trip. Purchasing a palette with neutral colors will ensure that your eyes don’t clash with your attire during an evening out.

The best thing about these convenient sets is that they usually retail for a reasonable price. Because they are affordable and easy to pack, if you really can’t decide on the shades you’ll want to wear on vacation, you could purchase two makeup palettes and they’d both fit easily into your cosmetic bag.

Pack Light

When flying, be mindful of the 3.4-ounce liquid limit TSA enforces for carryon items; the last thing you want is to throw away cosmetics that are not allowed on the plane. But that doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to the sample-size products available at grocery stores.

Many high-end companies offer products such as shampoo and conditioner in travel sizes. A great option is the Philip B. “Escape” Travel Kit. Complete with Lavender Hair & Body Shampoo, Light-Weight Deep Conditioning Crème Rinse, pH Restorative Detangling Toning Mist, and Lovin’ Hand & Body Crème, all of which are packaged in 2-ounce containers, Philip B. has your shower essentials covered.

Become acquainted with dry shampoo, because it can be your best friend! If showers are limited at your destination, or if you need to forego washing and drying your dirty locks so you’ll have more time to explore, a dry shampoo such as Pronto Dry Shampoo Powder by Oscar Blandi will do the trick. Simply spray it onto your hair, massage it into your scalp, comb through, and you’re set. The Oscar Blandi spray shampoo absorbs excess oil and adds volume to limp, greasy hair.

Multipurpose Must-Haves

Always be on the lookout for products that can be used for more than one purpose. If you have to bring it with you, it’s in your best interest to select items that you will get the most use out of. Tinted SPF moisturizers, shampoos that also serve as body soap, and salves should all be on your packing list.

Salves? Yes, salves! Your grandmother was onto something. Salves, also known as balms, have a variety of purposes, including moisturizing and soothing. You’d be surprised how handy a balm, such as the Rosebud Salve Tube, can be in both warm and cold weather. Discomfort caused by dry lips and sunburns alike – both common side effects of traveling – can be treated with salve. Rosebud Salve and other companies are modernizing this age-old beauty secret by providing cute, petite packaging in easy-to-carry containers.

For some, having these items packed can provide peace of mind. If you do opt to bring your own products, always select travel size or disposable items.

The above tips seem easy enough to keep in mind when packing, right? Here’s the test. Once your cosmetic bag is loaded and ready to go, review the items and ask yourself these questions:

- Do my carryon liquids exceed the TSA allowance?
- Do I have the essentials: shampoo and conditioner, makeup, etc.?
- Is it necessary to bring these items, or can I find them at my hotel?
- Have I packed similar items? Can I eliminate any of them?

Don’t forget – less is more. If it’s not a necessity, forget it. Not only will you feel less stressed about packing, but you’ll also have extra space in your suitcase to bring home souvenirs. Happy travels!
