Don’t Forget the Mouse – Practical Tips to Pick the Right Computer Mouse by John Newcomb
The Mouse. Such an ignored part of the computer, and one that you end up using the most. Most people just head over to the local Best Buy and pick up whatever they can get their hands on (usually bundled together with the keyboard). Consider that your hands rest almost exclusively on the mouse most of the time you’re on the computer, shouldn’t you spend more time (and money) on this little component?
Gamers aren’t excused from this crime either. I’ve seen many hardcore gamers spend thousands of dollars building the perfect gaming rig, and then spend next to nothing on the mouse. Then they curse it when they get fragged by someone in Counter-Strike!
The mouse you use should be comfortable, easy to use, responsive, and have the features that complement your needs. If you are going to use your computer for just browsing the internet and writng a few emails, then you definitely don’t need to splurge on the latest offering from Logitech. A regular Microsoft mouse would be more than enough for you.
[Tip: the larger the mouse, the more comfortable it'll be for long use. Those little travel mice are notoriously hard on the wrists after prolonged use. Avoid them if you know you're going to spend a lot of time on the computer].
If you are a designer, then you obviously want something that is very responsive. If you are using an Apple computer, then the latest Mighty Mouse is a great, if at times uncomfortable mouse. The next generation of mice by Microsoft with touch screens on top are great too, at least from the demos that I’ve seen. Otherwise, Logitech, the industry leader, makes some great mice for designers.
For gamers, there has never been a better time. Dozens of companies offer various different models desinged to make your experience better. Logitech’s Revolution MX Laser mouse, retailing at around $90-120, is a great gaming mouse with very responsive controls, a ton of buttons, and excellent fit. You really can’t go wrong with this one if you’re into gaming. Another good offering is the Microsoft SideWinder Gaming Mouse, coming in at around $60.
Take some time going through all your options before putting down money for a mouse. It is one of the most used components in your computer, so spend appropriate time and money buying it.
