One Day at a Time! by Earl Shugerman

Lord? I thank you from the bottom of my heart for teaching me to always take One Day at a Time ….. for your burden is easy & your yoke is light….
The good book has this expression as a guide to us all. I have spent much of my life suffering from chronic anxiety without knowing it.
The sound of the gas explosion was the most frightening of my life. I have been staying at The Hotel Hoff in Netanya Israel to enjoy the beautiful beaches and life of a tourist.
Thursday night I awoke to the deafening sound of an explosion and the flashes of a strange orange nature. My first thought was that the building was the victim of a terrorist attack. Sadly, this has been a tragic side of life in Israel for the sixty three years of the nation’s existence. This act of terror was a gas explosion that killed four and injured dozens. I put on my shoes, pants and shirt and ran for the life of me. I forget my socks and underwear. I and my immediate neighbors escaped without injury.
Everyone in the hotel wandered around Netanya all night after the midnight explosion. We overcame the initial shock and discussed the obvious question. What would happen to us? Many of us had come to Netanya for the summer, or for a long term stay. Therefore, we brought much of our clothing and personal items. In the morning the hotel owner found us still wandering and informed us that the city had found a room for each of us.
We were transferred to The Hotel Galil close to our former residence. Friday morning representatives of the City of Netanya came to the hotel to give us moral support and validate our short term stay at the hotel. We were treated to hot meals by a local service organization. We were told the obvious: Count your blessings! You are still alive, in good health, and those needing to find new homes will get it. The Israeli Army escorted us back to the hotel. We were stunned to find that in spite of the devastation all of our personal effects were left intact. What a miracle! Glass was scattered throughout my room, yet nothing was damaged!
The owner of the hotel, Ari, supported us as we supported him through the ordeal. He and the other business owners in the area lost or could lose everything. Most important, of course was the loss of three beautiful young girls and a young man.
This incident also showed the good and not good side of humanity. The explosion was very likely, the result of an effort to steal copper tubing and a resultant cut in the gas line. Yet the city, social service groups, and many citizens came to help and offer support.
One week has passed. The hotel will hopefully open again. Many of the other businesses in the area were destroyed. The owners contacted their insurance carriers and will rebuild. I have learned to travel through life with a big smile on my face. One day at a time
